1. Do one tough thing a day. This sounds ridiculously simplistic and shallow, but...it's helping me with some feelings of overwhelm and anxiety that I have been experiencing. Obviously, I am not advocating a to-do list of one item per day for your life. I am advocating committing to one TOUGH thing. That one that has been nagging you in the back of your mind for weeks. That email that you keep skipping over. That message you are dreading returning. That appointment that you really need to make. That frustrating return that you drive around in your car with but never take back. That appliance you keep saying you are going to replace. That stack of papers you desperately need to grade. Just one. Then...call it a win and move on to other less difficult items that are easy to cross off. If you think this is too little to make a difference, picture it 100 days from now. You will have crushed 100 of the toughest things you have been avoiding...that's a lot! 100 days from now is coming anyway...why not have 100 fewer tough things to worry about! This day next year...yep...365. That's a lot of tough things!! I'm just saying this mindset is helping me right now feel less overwhelmed and I love the feeling of momentum gained when I knock it off the list.
2. A similar idea I am experimenting with is to get rid of 10 items a day. I know I have too much "stuff" of all types. I have too many of those spaces, drawers, and closets around my house that are just filled with things that are more of a burden than a blessing. They make the house feel heavy...cluttered. Even if they can't be seen, you KNOW they are there. As Marie Kondo would say, they don't spark joy. Getting rid of stuff feels amazing!! I want fewer attachments. Fewer things to worry about. I want more SPACE. I started with my car, actually. It is a small confined space that I am in all the time, and it was manageable to tackle. I took everything out, cleaned it up, wiped all surfaces, vacuumed it out, and made it into a space I could spend time in and feel like there is order in my world. I moved to clothes next. I don't get crazy about it. If I miss a day, I do more the next. I missed a whole week and did 70 on the weekend. Whatever works. Similar to #1 above, in 100 days, I will be 1,000 items lighter in my life. A year? Wow...3,650 less things. Do I have that many to get rid of? Oh...I am sure of it! How about you? Is it time to have LESS instead of worrying about more?
3. A podcast I enjoy listening to is The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday. I have recommended his books before but the podcast is great, as well. On the weekdays, it tends to be short episodes focusing on a brief passage from a stoic philosopher and then on the weekends it is more long form interviews with interesting guests. If you are ever near Austin, check out his bookstore, The Painted Porch.
4. I have been getting back into the world of chess (I think I mentioned this before in a Sunday Seven) and a super exciting event is coming up from November 24th to December 16th. The World Championship is happening in a much-anticipated match between current world champion, Magnus Carlsen (Norway), and the challenger, Ian Nepomniatchi (Russia). Magnus has been the undisputed world champion since 2013 and is still currently the highest-ranked player in the world. The best thing about chess these days is that all of the big tournaments and matches are streamed live with analysis and commentary. You can follow the match as it unfolds or watch commentators recap and analyze the games afterward. The board and pieces used have sensors and as each move is made it is immediately transmitted online. There are many choices for how to watch depending on how advanced you want the commentary to be. Check it out! The match is being held in Dubai alongside the World Expo. Go Magnus! (By the way, the US Championship is happening right now!)
5. Author of Make Learning Magical, Tisha Richmond, is wonderful at adapting existing board and card games for the classroom. On her latest blog, she shares an idea from colleague Lisa Yamashita for adapting the card game Happy Salmon for use with either students or staff. She also just hosted a #tlap chat about it. Check it out HERE! While you are there, look around her site for more ideas!
6. We LOVE when DBC Inc. authors win awards!! And wow...we just had two big ones!!! Lead Like a Pirate co-author, Beth Houf, was just named the NASSP 2022 Principal of the Year!!! Amazing!! Congrats to Beth!
Also, Play Like a Pirate author, Quinn Rollins, was just named the 2021 Utah History Teacher of the Year! Go Quinn!!
7. Okay...don't read this one. Certainly don't act on it. It is dangerous. I was at Costco and found a tub of vegan chocolate chip cookie dough (The brand is Eat Pastry) that is fine to eat raw. As in...the best way to have cookie dough. It was delicious. It was highly problematic having it in the fridge. It is now gone. All of it. In my belly. You have been warned.
Have an absolutely AMAZING week!! Thank you for all you do for students and staff under the trying circumstances of this school year. You are truly appreciated!
